Attorney Emily Lawrence

Emily Lawrence
Attorney
Emily Lawrence earned her Bachelor of Science in Political Science, with a minor in Legal Studies, from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. During her time at Lamar University, she was actively involved in student organizations, worked part-time at a local firm, and interned with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office. Through this internship, Emily observed various courtroom proceedings, gaining valuable insight into the criminal justice system.
Witnessing the prosecution’s work firsthand deepened her appreciation for the vital role of defense attorneys in ensuring fairness and justice.
Emily went on to earn her law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock, Texas, in 2022. While in law school, she participated in the Caprock Regional Public Defender’s Clinic, where she discovered her passion for criminal defense. This experience provided her with hands-on experience to work directly with clients in rural communities, developing both her advocacy and courtroom skills.
Throughout law school, she was active in advocacy and service. She participated in various advocacy organizations and events; even winning the Notre Dame National Appellate Advocacy Tournament for Religious Freedom in 2021. In addition, she served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”) for the South Plains, where she zealously advocated for the best interest of children in the care of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Before joining Shane Phelps Law, Emily clerked and practiced in the Lubbock and surrounding areas, gaining experience in criminal defense, family law, and probate law. After moving to the Bryan/College Station area to be closer to her family, she focused her practice exclusively on criminal defense in Brazos and many surrounding counties, including Austin, Burleson, Grimes, Lee, Robertson, Waller, and Washington County.
Outside of the courtroom, Emily is creative and imaginative. Emily enjoys reading, baking, drawing, and painting. Any “art-project” she can take on, she will. She loves spending time walking her dog, Beau. Emily is an animal lover! She frequently volunteers at animal shelters and has a soft spot for rescuing strays. The most recent of which, a kitten, quickly became her own foster-fail success story.
